" मेरे विचार में भारत ना हिंदू देश बन सकता हैं, ना हिंदू धर्म भारत सरकारका धर्म बन सकता हैं l

हमे याद रखना चाहिये की हमारे देश में अल्पसंख्यांक भी रहते हैं

और ये हमारा कर्तव्य हैं की

उनकी सुरक्षा कां प्रबंध करे l

ये देश सबका देश हैं l

चाहे किसीका धर्म हो जाती हो l

हम उस रास्ते पर नहीं चल सकते जिस रास्ते पर पाकिस्तान चल रहा हैं l

हमे यह ध्यान रखना होगा की

हमारे धर्मनिरपेक्ष उद्देश सुरक्षित रहे l

यहाँ हर मुसलमान हर इसाई

और अन्य अल्पसंख्याक वर्ग को

यह विश्वास होना चाहिये की

वे सुरक्षित और

उसे भारतीय नागरिक की

हैसियत से बराबर

के अधिकार प्राप्त हैं 

अगर हम उसे यह अहसास

दिलाने में नाकाम रहे तो

ये हमारी विरासत और देश कां

घोर अपमान होगा l

(In June 1947, when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was suggested by B.M Birla that India should be declared a Hindu state, with its official religions as Hinduism; he rejected the suggestion and advocated Secularism for India. He said that “we must not forget that there are other minorities whose protection is our primary responsibility“. He also said that State must exist for all irrespective of the cast and creed and the talk of a Hindu Rastra was a mad idea. In 1950, he declared that “Ours is a secular state and we can not fashion our politics in the way Pakistan is doing it. Here every Muslim should feel that he is an Indian citizen and has equal rights as an Indian“. Patel further said that “If we can not make a Muslim feel like this, we shall not be worthy of our heritage and our country“.)
